Training

Training is a never-ending process in a fire fighter's life.  They work constantly to improve their education and skills, to better protect life and property from the dangers of fire.  Fire fighters start out their careers as rookies, having received training at the State Fire Academy.  However, they must go through intensive additional training in the procedures used by the department to ensure that all responders have the most up-to-date knowledge and  will work in a unified manner in emergencies.

Apparatus set up for practice burn

Fire trucks are set up in preparation for a practice burn in a home schedule for demolition.  The owner generously allowed the Department to use the building for more realistic training conditions.

Captain (now Chief) Paige explains the training objectives

Careful planning is integral to obtaining maximum benefit from training sessions.  Objectives and methods are carefully discussed before the session begins.

Smoke coming from upper floor of home

Smoke is generated by burning combustibles in metal drums in the building

Cutting through the roof

A firefighter prepares to ventilate the building.  Ventilation allows hot gases to be removed from the building, allowing the firefighters to fight the fire.

Model house being built

A model building is built to visibly simulate flame spread.

Observing flame movement

The actions of the flames are observed through windows in the model.

In second floor office

Firefighter stays low to avoid hot gases, which would be present in real fire

Blindfolded

Once in the 2nd floor office, recruits were instructed to remove their masks and replace them with ones covered with tape, simulating severe smoke conditions.

Descending the stairs

Recruits descend the stairs blindfolded.  During the descent Captains supervising the practice hinder their progress, simulating real-life obstructions.

Providing assistance

During the exercise, one recruit's air supply was turned off, reinforcing the need for communication and cooperation between firefighters.

Finished!!

Wearing full gear in the summer is very hot, but necessary for the firefighter's protection.
